While the college basketball season is right around the corner, buzz continues in the Spokane area, even after the loss of Matt Bouldin.

Ill give you a low post and a raise on why:

Elias Harris, Robert Sacre, and Sam Dower.

That's why.

Kansas - Why does the number one team in the nation HAVE TO drop in the rankings if they lose a game? That makes no sense.

Kentucky - I might get hammered for this one, but I really don't care.

Syracuse

Ohio State

We overcame odds last time in Portland Oregon, and snuck out with a huge victory.

Portland, at one time this season, was ranked for the first time since like the 1950s .... (?)

Anyways, Portland was hoping to snatch a victory from Gonzaga at home, and now they come to the Kennel. We are going to be rocking, we are going to be loud.

But Portland still has a good team, and we are still needing to brush up on some weaknesses.

Ok, so it seems as though none of my teams can win in December. I have kind of accepted the fact that the Cowboys will lose in December, but seriously....

Gonzaga loses to Wake Forest????

I know, I know, Elias Harris and the foul kind of ruined the game..... but I didn't see how that particular foul warraned an ejection....

Yes, I am being serious....

The Great Northwestern Rivalry isn't Oregon-Oregon State .... That's the Civil War. Its not Washington-Washington State ... That's the Apple Cup. Its not Washington-Gonzaga ... not since Washington has backed out of our series of games, since we last kicked their behinds ....

The Great Northwestern Rivalry is Gonzaga-Washington State. Washington State hasn't ever backed out of playing the upstart mid-majors, and I don't ever think they will. It seems like they have a real classy AD and coach (at all times) ... They don't go out and stop a series because the mid-major wins a single game against them... They continue to play each other.

The Cougars have actually suprised us Gonzaga fans, mostly in part to the way they have played basketball over the past few years. Sure, they have upset us a few of the past couple of years, but their defense is what is so suprising. Why? The consistency they have at the guard and post positions to keep playing hard-nosed defense is just absolutely incredible. They have also used the shot clock all the way to the bitter end, and taken the easy shots at the basket. This is why you have seen the 55-54 games that they played. It was their style.

We play Washington State in one week and is our next opponent. Since I won't wanna do a preview till closer till gametime, its NEVER too late to look at a few quick notes, is it?

#1: Is the most obvious of all the "key points" in this blog. Ken Bone is the new head coach of Washington State. Oddly enough, we don't play Portland State again, but we play against Ken Bone again. Remember, he took us down in that epic upset just one year ago....

#2: Washington State plays tough nosed defense. But lets remember something. That was the Bennetts who really got that all going. Now that Ken Bone is the head coach I would expect a lot more 3-point shooting early in the shot clock. I think players on WAZZOU will play a lot more freely and take more wide open shots whenever they get them. I don't think you will be seeing low scoring games too much either. This team will start putting up points, I am just not sure how long it will be, though.

Man do we have playmakers!!!! And Clutch players... Since Adam Morrison left, I don't think we have had as clutch of a player as Elias Harris!

Robert Sacre made an EPIC block to send the game to overtime ...

Matt Bouldin and Steven Gray kept making big shots (thus they won Maui-Invitational Co-MVPs)

Damn this was a GREAT day to be A diehard Gonzaga fanatic!!!!!!

Honestly, I am not sure what to expect in this game. Maybe a physical game from both sides seems to be the logical guess. Cincy is very physical all-round basketball.

Thing is, so can Gonzaga.

I am not sure who any of their players are outside of Yancey Gates and Deonta Vaughn, and I really don't know how this game is going to go....

I will miss this game as well while I am at work. Good thing I had a VCR tape to record the Wisky game, and loved every minute of it!

I have always respected Wisconsin University (in football and basketball for that matter) and their style of play. What I really respect is the consistency of Wisconsin basketball, and their head coach Bo Ryan.

When I was watching the game [Wisconsin v. Arizona] last night and saw the score 16-3, I turned off the game. Why? I knew it'd be close... I knew the refs were going to give some calls to Arizona. But the thing is, I thought no matter how hard Arizona came back, they just aren't that good this year. They are, however, a lot better than what I thought. I just didn't think Bo Ryan and the Badgas would lose to a clearly inferior team.

What I am trying to say is, history has a tendency of repeating itself. Both Gonzaga and Memphis both lost close to clearly superior teams (Michigan State and Kansas respectively) and now Gonzaga and Wisconsin both survived scares in Maui. It was just meant to be, I guess, so we got the matchup the media wanted. Wisconsin-Gonzaga.

As we all know by now, Gonzaga kicks off their portion of the Maui Invitational by taking on Colorado today at 3pm ET.

So looking towards today's game I see a team that is near doormat status in the Big XII. But that's being judgemental. Whether it may be true or not, I don't like being that way.

So, we will look today at how we need to beat Colorado, and what is good in Boulder right now.

As I look at things Colorado is actually 3-0, with wins over virtually nobody .... Beating Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Texas Southern and Coppin State aren't impressive, so this is their first real test.

Gonzaga had a rough game on Saturday against Mississippi Valley State. Did they lose? No. Was the game Ever in question. No.

But they turned the ball over too many times. Was it jitters? I don't think so. Matt Bouldin was the one seemingly turning the ball over. That will have to stop if they wanna beat the #2 team in the nation today.

We all know about Kalin Lucas. He is a dominant player in the post. Can Gonzaga stop Lucas? I don't think so. They will have to contain him. What is really good news for Michigan State, however, is that Gonzaga really doesn't have a Josh Heytvelt or a Ronny Turiaf type player for this game. They have Elias Harris and Robert Sacre, two physical forwards/centers that could in the long run help wear down Michigan State. Will that happen? Probably not. Michigan State is pretty physical themselves.

So the time has finally come:

The Start of College Basketball season. Gonzaga will take on a fairly weak SWAC team in Mississippi Valley State, but this game could be a first to show some of the talented freshmen (I'm not quite sure on Bol Kong) ... but we will see one of the better backcourt in the country this side of the Rockies.

Why am I looking forward to this game even though I think we will win by 40+ points? I have some reasons for ya:

1. Its the first game of the year.

Its almost college basketball season, and as it approaches, I would like to introduce my 2nd WCC Conference Preview. Under the name gonzagafan62 last year, I got a lot of good reviews from last year's preview.

This year, I am going to try to do the same as I am probably one of the best to try such a preview.

Now that I got that outta the way, lets go to the preview!

Introduction: This year the West Coast Conference loses some of the more exciting players west of the Mississippi River. Losing guys like Josh Heytvelt, Jeremy Pargo, Austin Daye, John Bryant, Patrick Mills, Diamon Simpson and Gyno Pomare is really going to hurt the WCC. While somewhat unknown, you saw many these guys in the NCAA tournament as either a Gonzaga Bulldog, a St. Mary's Gael, or a San Diego Torero. The others you might recall from their listings in the top twenty of several statistical categories, like rebounds, or points per game.

North Carolina vs. Gonzaga, a game that I wanted to see from the start of the 2009 NCAA Tournament is just about here. But like the 'ole master says, be careful what you wish for. Well, I am not the only one that wanted to see this matchup. There were some Tarheels fans believe it or not, and other just casual fans...

So I am not the only one that wanted to see this matchup.

First we will start with the usual and I ask the question: What the hell is a tarheel?????

Well nobody knows the exact explaination to the fact of "Tarheels" But there is one GLARING explanation that I found to be the most redundant over the internet, so here I go:

Last year, Ty Rogers had a buzzerbeater to beat Drake University, and when you win that way, sometimes you lose that way too. Its just the nature of the sporting world. What you do to teams, teams do the same thing to you down the road. This theory was proven yesterday when Gonzaga's Dmeitri Goodson a true freshman banked a 10 foot jumper to win the basketball game, as Gonzaga prevailed against a red-hot Western Kentucky team.

As I said in my preview Gonzaga needed to contain Orlando Mendez Valdez, and Gonzaga was really in trouble in the first half, when Mendez-Valdez nailed 4 straight threes, and had 17 points in the first 7 minutes, and Pettigrew great as well..... As the game progressed, and Mark Few made the adjustment to put the quicker and younger Dmetri Goodson on Orlando Mendez-Valdez, Goodson didn't let him score at all the rest of the half.

Gonzaga will battle Western Kentucky in a game to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. The mission is simple. Win, or go home. But completing this "simple" mission, is NOT going to be the easiest of all tasks that I have ever seen before me. So, here we go.

What is a Hilltopper?

Apparently the school [Western Kentucky] sits on the top of a hill. Got that? OK, well that was simple. But what the heck is their red blob of a monster (or mascot)????? I have never seen such a thing make absolute no sense to me before... but here we go. So apparently as I have flipped around the internet one common answer I found was a startling one that still made no sense to me at all. I found out that this was a blob of blood from the enemy's team. Not sure if this is entirely true or not bu that was the common answer. I tried, but in frustration of getting this answer and a few distinct others, I have that to report.

Gonzaga, like many of the top seeds this week came out very sluggish... and then they turned it on...

To start, like I said in my preview that Gonzaga can't guard the perimeter shooting. Gonzaga proved me right.. All they did all day was let Akron shoot the three, and they kept draining them. As the game progressed, Austin Daye and Josh Heytvelt both had dunks to light the crowd up to get them back in the game, as the crowd was pro Zaga...

Akron proved me wrong and played with nothing to lose and had the will to win as they were up by 4 at the half. With about 10 minutes left in the game I felt like we were too much for the Zips, Stephen Gray took a 3 down 49-47 and that three was good and they went on to control the game from there to take the lead 50-47.

As the tournament rolls around quicker than ever before, the Zags finished last year off to another dissapointment to another cinderella in Davidson. This year however, Gonzaga looks to make a mark in the tournament, and they start with the Akron Zips.

The first question that comes outta your mouth probably isn't if Gonzaga is going to win the game or not, its probably something like this:

"What the hell is a Zip????" Well, origionally short for "Zippers" Akron decided on this nickname back in the early years of their collegiate athletics, and the students voted for their nickname. Don't ask me why either, I read it a few years back, and that is all that stuck in my mind. Anways, the Akron mascot is not a zipper, its actually a female kangaroo named Zippy. Zippy is only one a select few female mascots in the entire country.
